Day 16 - Touring, Vlogging, Shopping, and Cooking!

   Today was a busy day filled with shopping, touring, and DIY lots of different types of food with our BnB’s 叔叔 (uncle) and 阿姨 (auntie)! This morning we had an excellent homemade breakfast cooked by the BnB owners, went on the public bus, and then arrived to the Yilan Market tour. We got to meet Young Grandpa and his life partner, Musical Angel, who was singing and playing instruments to welcome us to Yilan. We had many different samples from different food stands, and every piece tasted amazing. We even got to go under the market and see the meat butcher, noodle dough maker, etc. We toured all over the market and finally met back up together at the temple on the roof. 

At the temple, we surprisingly met the Mayor of Yilan and got to hear her speak about her background. After the Mayor, Erika, Anya, and I had our own adventure around the market. We bought lots of clothes and went shopping and were headed on our way back home. Once we got home, we started making our own DIY 粽子 (rice balls). After dinner, Young Grandpa and his crew came back to our BnB and brought fried chicken and squid! A great way to end my personal favorite day of the Dialogue so far.

08.08.23   In contrast to the previous day, our second to last day of the program felt quite packed with events. The day started off quite interesting. The day before I had prepped for my presentation for the Final mandarin presentation, and felt quite confident about it. What I had not prepared for was all of the distractions that would happen during the presentations. Throughout most of our presentations the building we were in was testing their fire alarm systems, so many times presenters were interrupted by a loud noise followed by “testing, testing”. On top of that during my presentation both the professor who accompanied us to Genshi county, and one of the directors of our program came into our classroom to listen in on my presentation. To say that I was a little worried about my pronunciation and grammar would be an understatement. To top of my presentation in the best way possible. Day 32: A Strange Calm

08.07.23  Today strangely has felt quite calm, in spite of the ever closing deadline for our final projects approaching, and seemingly everyone else racing against time to complete their work. I feel at ease. It feels as if tomorrow's presentations and the impending final research paper deadline should add to the pressure to get everything done, yet I am quite relaxed at this point. Perhaps I am just an optimistic path I've found to reach the end successfully. Amidst the academic chaos, today brought a delightful surprise as I celebrated an early birthday gift. Additionally, the closure of our Mandarin class's classroom economy brought back fond memories and added to the day's unique experiences. As the day winds down, I reflect on the events that transpired and prepare for another productive grind session. Day 17: Farming at Island Time

While several students went to the beach, the rest of us headed over to Island Time where we experienced life as a part-time farmer! We had the pleasure of having Lai Ching-sung, the founder of Island Time, give us a guided tour of his “farmland utopia.”  Mr. Lai shared his experience on leaving the bustling city and becoming a “dreamer,” which he calls “half farmer/half X.” I think it’s truly admirable that he was able to gain the trust of farmers around the Shenguo Village to farm organically. Farming without the use of pesticides and herbicides of those sorts was  very much unheard of at that time, so Mr. Lai really paved the path for organic agricultural practices in Yilan county. After listening to Mr. Lai’s life as “half farmer/half X,” we were given the opportunity to farm and become 农夫 (nóng fū- farmers) ourselves!
